ScreenClipr vs. TechSmith Snagit

Snagit is one of the leading screenshot tools on Mac, and the only one we compare against that also runs on Windows. Here is how it stacks up against ScreenClipr on price, license terms and features, including where Snagit is the better pick.

Prices and license terms as of September 2026, as stated on our comparison table. Verify current prices on Snagit's own site before you buy; vendors change them.

The short version

The biggest difference is how you pay. Snagit is a $39/yr subscription, and by TechSmith's own support docs your copy stops working if you don't keep paying. ScreenClipr is $9.99 once, includes a year of updates, and keeps working forever if you never renew.

On features they overlap heavily. Both do screenshots with annotation, screen recording, and a searchable, OCR'd capture library.

Snagit is the better pick if you need Windows or want a longer trial. ScreenClipr is macOS-only.

What it costs over three years

Same prices as the homepage comparison, run out three years. Snagit's subscription is forced, so its cost keeps compounding. ScreenClipr is shown both ways because renewal is optional.

App / renewal choiceYear 1Year 2Year 33-year total
ScreenClipr, never renewed$9.99$0$0$9.99
ScreenClipr, renewed every year$9.99$9.99$9.99$29.97
TechSmith Snagit, forced subscription$39$39$39$117

Over three years that is $107.01 less than Snagit if you never renew ScreenClipr, and $87.03 less if you renew it every single year. Even a single year of Snagit ($39) costs more than three years of renewed ScreenClipr ($29.97).

Who each one is better for

Pick ScreenClipr if…

  • Mac-only, and you would rather not rent your screenshot tool: the app you pay for keeps working, even if you never renew.
  • You want a searchable, OCR'd library, screen recording and a full annotation editor in one $9.99 purchase.
  • You want a native, lightweight app, with captures, annotations and the search index kept on your Mac.
  • You would like a 14-day refund window and a trial that needs no credit card.

Pick Snagit if…

  • You need Windows. Snagit runs on macOS and Windows; ScreenClipr is macOS only.
  • You work on a mixed Mac and Windows team and want everyone on the same tool.
  • You want a longer trial: Snagit's is 15 days against our 7.
  • You are comfortable with an annual subscription and prefer a product with a longer track record. ScreenClipr is young and has no back catalog of reviews to point to.

Switching from Snagit

  • Run them side by side. The ScreenClipr trial is 7 days with full access and no credit card, so you can try real work before deciding. Nothing about the trial touches Snagit.
  • Bring your files over. Anything saved as an image or video file can be dragged into the ScreenClipr Library window; it is copied in and OCR-indexed like a native capture. If your captures live only inside Snagit's own library, export them to files from Snagit first.
  • Export before your Snagit subscription lapses. Because a lapsed Snagit copy stops working, get anything you still need out while you still can.
  • Check the shortcut. ScreenClipr's capture picker defaults to Control Shift C. You can rebind it in Preferences › Shortcuts, and it warns you if it conflicts with another shortcut.
  • Pick a save folder. Captures go to ~/Pictures/ScreenClipr by default; Preferences › Change Save Location… changes it.

Common questions

Does ScreenClipr run on Windows?

No. ScreenClipr is a native macOS app for macOS 14 (Sonoma) or later, on Apple silicon or Intel. Snagit runs on both macOS and Windows, so if you need Windows, Snagit is the better fit.

What happens if I stop paying for ScreenClipr?

The app keeps working exactly as it is, forever. Your $9.99 includes a year of updates; renewing for another $9.99 is optional and only unlocks another year of updates. Snagit, by contrast, is a subscription that stops working if it isn't renewed.

Can I bring my existing screenshots into ScreenClipr?

Yes, if they are image or video files: drag them into the Library window and they are copied in and OCR-indexed, so you can search the text inside them.
