ScreenClipr vs. Xnapper

Xnapper and ScreenClipr are both native, Mac-only, pay-once apps. Xnapper is a focused screenshot tool; ScreenClipr adds screen recording and a searchable library. Here is when each makes sense.

Prices and license terms as of September 2026, as stated on our comparison table. Verify current prices on Xnapper's own site before you buy; vendors change them.

The short version

They share the same model. Both are macOS-only, native apps sold as a one-time purchase with an optional renewal for further updates.

ScreenClipr does more and costs less. $9.99 against $29.99, and it adds screen recording and a searchable, OCR'd library. Xnapper does neither.

Xnapper is the better pick if you only need quick, styled screenshots. It is a lighter, more focused tool, and its free tier has no time limit (with a watermark).

What it costs over three years

Same prices as the homepage comparison, run out three years. Both apps use optional renewal, so neither total grows unless you choose to renew. Xnapper's renewal price is not published on the homepage, so it is not included here.

App / renewal choiceYear 1Year 2Year 33-year total
ScreenClipr, never renewed$9.99$0$0$9.99
ScreenClipr, renewed every year$9.99$9.99$9.99$29.97
Xnapper, one-time, not renewed$29.99$0$0$29.99

If you never renew either app, ScreenClipr is $20.00 less. Renewing ScreenClipr every year for three years ($29.97) still comes in about the same as Xnapper's one-time price alone ($29.99).

Who each one is better for

Pick ScreenClipr if…

  • You want to record the screen as well as capture it, with a trim step before it lands in your library.
  • You want to search old captures by the text inside them, not just by filename.
  • You want the lower price: $9.99 against $29.99.
  • You want a trial with every feature open, rather than a free tier that watermarks what you export.

Pick Xnapper if…

  • You only ever need quick, nicely styled screenshots. Xnapper is a lighter, more focused tool built for exactly that.
  • You want a free tier with no time limit. Xnapper's is watermarked, but it doesn't expire; ScreenClipr's trial is 7 days.
  • You do not want recording or a library and would rather not have them in your way.
  • You would like a product with a longer track record. ScreenClipr is young and has no back catalog of reviews to point to.

Switching from Xnapper

  • Run them side by side. The ScreenClipr trial is 7 days with full access and no credit card. Try your normal routine, then decide.
  • Bring your files over. Screenshots you saved as files can be dragged into the ScreenClipr Library window; they are copied in and OCR-indexed like a native capture, so old screenshots become searchable by the text inside them.
  • Check the shortcut. ScreenClipr's capture picker defaults to Control Shift C. Rebind it in Preferences › Shortcuts; it warns you inline if it conflicts with another shortcut.
  • Pick a save folder. Captures go to ~/Pictures/ScreenClipr by default; Preferences › Change Save Location… changes it.
  • Licenses. A ScreenClipr license key activates on up to 3 Macs.

Common questions

Does ScreenClipr have a free tier like Xnapper's?

No. ScreenClipr has a 7-day free trial with full access to every feature, then it is a one-time $9.99. Xnapper's free tier has no time limit but is watermarked.

Can ScreenClipr record the screen?

Yes. Choose Video from the same capture picker, control the recording from a small HUD with Pause, Discard and Stop, and trim it before it goes into your library. Xnapper does not record.

Is ScreenClipr overkill if I only take screenshots?

It might be. If quick, styled screenshots are all you will ever do, Xnapper is a more focused tool. If you also want recording or want to find old captures by the text in them, ScreenClipr covers that in the same $9.99.
